Understanding Global Warming

Global warming is the increase in the average measured temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century, and its projected continuation.

The average global air temperature near the Earth's surface increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the 100 years ending in 2005. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes "most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-twentieth century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic (man-made) greenhouse gas concentrations" via an enhanced greenhouse effect. Natural phenomena such as solar variation combined with volcanoes probably had a small warming effect from pre-industrial times to 1950 and a small cooling effect from 1950 onward.

These basic conclusions have been endorsed by at least 30 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries. While individual scientists have voiced disagreement with some findings of the IPCC, the overwhelming majority of scientists working on climate change agree with the IPCC's main conclusions.

Climate model projections summarized by the IPCC indicate that average global surface temperature will likely rise a further 1.1 to 6.4 °C

  • Comcast, one of the country's largest Internet providers, said this week that it would place limits on customers' broadband usage.

Beginning Oct. 1, Comcast will put a 250 gigabyte-a-month cap on residential users. The limit will not affect most users, at least not in the short-term, but is certain to create tension as some technologies gain traction.

  • The Borg: Zero Signal of Victory

Part biological. Part cybernetic. The Borg is the ultimate villain and are well known within the Star Trek Universe. From their introduction in Star Trek: The Next Generation to the many encounters on Star Trek: Voyager to even the days of Star Trek: Enterprise, the Borg are the nightmare made real.

It is the year 2366. Stardate: 43989.1.

A year has past since the USS Enterprise first encountered the Borg at System J-25, which was over 7,000 light years away. It was known that the Borg knew of Earth and were likely coming. But, the Federation had figured that they had years to plan for the impending invasion. How wrong they were. The Borg have entered the Alpha Quadrant and they are heading toward Earth.

The Enterprise is dispatched to slow the Borg ship, since they have the most experience with the threat. But, whereas, before the Borg seemed only interested in technologies, they reveal a new agenda when they kidnap and assimilate Captain Picard.

Now known as Locutus, all of Picard's intelligence and experience are used against the Federation as the Borg decimate a fleet of forty starships at Wolf 359.

The Enterprise, under the command of the field promoted Captain William Riker, manages to recapture their former captain. But, it does nothing to stop the continuing Bor
